Add to Claude
Find Research is a remote MCP connector. It works on Claude Free, Pro and Max, on the web and in the desktop app; once added, it is available on mobile too.
- Copy the connector URL:
https://findresearch.site/mcp - In Claude, open Customize → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
- Enter the name Find Research and paste the URL. Claude detects the sign-in settings on its own; keep them. If it asks how to register an OAuth client, choose Register automatically.
- Click Add, then Connect. A Find Research page opens: sign in with your email (we send a one-time link, no password) and click Allow access.
- If you have no plan yet, start the 3-day free trial on your account page.
On Team and Enterprise plans an organization owner adds custom connectors under Organization settings → Connectors; members then connect from Customize → Connectors.
Add to ChatGPT
ChatGPT connects to remote MCP servers through developer mode, on the web, for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans. Developer mode is a beta feature; on Business, Enterprise and Edu an admin may need to allow it first.
Start your plan or free trial on your account page first; the ChatGPT connection uses the same account.
- Open Settings → Apps → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode.
- Choose Create app. Name it Find Research, paste
https://findresearch.site/mcpand choose OAuth for authentication. - Sign in with your email when Find Research asks, and click Allow access.
- In a new chat, open the + menu, choose Developer mode (or More) and select Find Research.
Your plan and limits are shared between Claude and ChatGPT: it is one Find Research account.
Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http find-research https://findresearch.site/mcpThen run /mcp in Claude Code and choose Find Research to sign in.
Using it in chat
You do not need special commands. Ask the way you would ask a librarian, and Claude calls the tools when papers would help. To make sure a conversation uses the connector, check that Find Research is switched on in the chat’s + menu (Claude: Connectors; ChatGPT: Developer mode).
- “Check whether these references from my draft are real.”
- “Find recent randomized trials on time-restricted eating and insulin sensitivity.”
- “What are the most cited papers on CRISPR base editing in wheat since 2020?”
- “Is there a free PDF of 10.1038/s41586-021-03819-2?”
- “Format these five papers as a BibTeX file.”
Every paper comes with a DOI or a source link. If Claude mentions a paper that did not come from the connector, ask it to check the reference with Find Research.
Tools
All tools only read public scholarly data. None of them changes anything.
| Tool | What it does | Inputs |
|---|---|---|
search_papers | Searches OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, Crossref and arXiv in parallel, merges duplicates and ranks results by agreement between sources. | query; limit (1–25, default 10); year_from, year_to; open_access_only; sort: relevance, citations or date |
get_paper | Full details for one paper: abstract, all authors, venue, date, citation count, identifiers, open-access status. | id: a DOI, arXiv ID, PMID (pmid:123), an ID from search results, or a doi.org, arxiv.org or PubMed link |
find_open_access | Finds a legal free copy through Unpaywall and the indexed sources, or says that none is known. | id, as above |
format_citation | Formats a reference from the source metadata, or exports it for Zotero, Mendeley or EndNote. Warns when the paper has been retracted. | id; style: apa, mla, chicago, bibtex, gost, ris or csl-json |
create_bibliography | Builds a formatted reference list from up to 50 items. Each item can be an ID, a DOI or a rough reference or title, matched to the real paper first. Unmatched items are listed separately, never invented. | references (1–50); style (as format_citation); order: alphabetical or as_given |
verify_citation | Checks whether a reference points to a real paper: verified, partly correct (with each wrong title, year, author or DOI listed) or not found, plus the correct record. | reference: the citation as written, or a DOI |
find_related_papers | Papers that cite a paper, or the papers it cites, from OpenAlex, sorted by citations or date. | id; relation: cited_by or references; limit (1–25); sort: citations or date |
get_usage | Your plan, how many searches and PDF lookups are left, and when limits reset or the trial ends. Not counted. | none |
Limits
Find Research is a subscription. Pro includes 2,000 searches and 500 open-access PDF lookups a month; Max includes 10,000 searches and 3,000 PDF lookups. Monthly limits reset on the first day of each month (UTC). New accounts can try either plan free for 3 days, with 50 searches and 15 PDF lookups; start or manage your plan on your account page.
- Each call to search_papers, verify_citation, create_bibliography or find_related_papers counts as one search, however many papers it handles.
- A find_open_access call that finds a copy counts as one PDF lookup. One that finds nothing is not counted.
- get_paper, format_citation and get_usage are not counted. Ask the assistant “how many searches do I have left?” to see your usage.
When a limit is reached, Claude tells you so and when it resets. Your usage is on your account page.
Sources
Find Research uses only legal sources and links only to legal copies. It never uses shadow libraries such as Sci-Hub, LibGen or Anna’s Archive.
- OpenAlex: the main index of works, authors and venues. OpenAlex data is released under CC0.
- Semantic Scholar: citation data and TL;DR summaries, from the Allen Institute for AI.
- Crossref: DOI metadata deposited by publishers.
- arXiv: preprints. Thank you to arXiv for use of its open access interoperability.
- Unpaywall: locations of legal open-access copies.
Abstracts and metadata belong to their authors and publishers. Find Research shows them to help you find and cite papers; full texts are always opened at their source.
Troubleshooting
Claude says it cannot connect
Check that the URL is exactly https://findresearch.site/mcp, with no extra characters. Remove the connector in Customize → Connectors and add it again.
The sign-in email does not arrive
Look in spam or promotions, and wait a minute before asking for a new link. Each link works once and expires after an hour.
The assistant answers without searching
Make sure Find Research is switched on for the chat in the + menu, or ask directly: “Search Find Research for…”.
A source shows as unavailable
Results still come from the sources that answered. Upstream services sometimes slow down; trying again a minute later usually helps.
Disconnecting
Remove the connector in Claude, or revoke Claude’s access under Connected apps on your account page.
